Cinema Critique- High School Muscial

Out of all three High School Musical Movies, one of the most iconic moments was in High School Musical 2 when Gabriella broke up with Troy. Gabriella and Troy have been together since the first song in the first musical when they didn't even know each other. As the movies went on, Troy and Gabriella are the obvious protagonists. However, in the scene where they break up, Troy becomes the antagonist because he had been spending too much time with Sharpay (whom some might consider to be the antagonist throughout the movies), her family and friends, and not enough time with Gabriella and their friends.

This scene takes place at night by the pool and eventually ends up near the golf course. Both of these locations have been key parts to the movie because they were caught swimming after hours together by the manager and were given their first strike. After their first strike, Troy made a picnic for him and Gabriella to share on the golf course where the sprinklers are turned on by Sharpay in hopes to ruin their lunch. But, instead of running inside, they start dancing under the sprinklers which is where they receive their second strike of the summer. Both of these places they had made fond memories at in the beginning of the summer. I think the director chose to film the scene there because it related to the characters personally. The breakup takes place at night because if it was during the day, there would be people in the pool and on the golf course whereas at night, it makes sense that no one else out there, When Gabriella leaves the country club, she is picked up by her mom in their van. It would have been really awkward if Gabriella sang this whole song to break up with Troy but then had to walk away from him home which is why she gets picked up. In the beginning of the movie, Troy gives Gabriella a necklace with the letter "T" on it as a symbol of their relationship and the beginning summer they're about to spend with each other. When she breaks up with him, she hands him the necklace and the camera then films a close up of the necklace in Troys hand as he closes his hand like he doesn't want to let go of her. Both the characters are dressed appropriatly for the weather and their job. It's summer in New Mexico but they work at a country club so, Gabriella is wearing a summer dress and Troy is wearing a collared t-shirt and pants. Throughout the scene there is a mix of close up shots and wide shots. An example of the close up is the necklace in Troy's hand and an example of a wide shot is when Gabriella turns and walks away from Troy, the camera pans to the left so you can see Troy running around the corner after her.
